During his travels, Paul was preaching in Ephesus and trying to explain to the people that their idols ands shrines were no good — that Jesus was the son of the one true God. And a silversmith who made his living by making those idols wasn’t too pleased. I get it. His livelihood was at risk. So of course he gets his peers together and says: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.”
‭‭(Acts‬ ‭19:25–26)

They plotted to instead discredit Paul and now people were confused and the city was in an uproar. “The assembly was in confusion: some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.”
‭‭(Acts‬ ‭19:32)

Anyone else remember the scene from Mean Girls toward the end where the entire student body is losing their minds and yelling and screaming and then one guy stands up and points at a girl declaring “She doesn’t even go here!” 😂 That’s what I imagine this story to be — lots of drama and then some people just there for the drama, not really knowing what the chaos was about.

We have a LOT of things to be outraged by these days. Open social media. You’ll find at least 10 things within 10 seconds. Let’s clear out the drama, shall we? Outrage for the sake of outrage is noise and distracting from the real issues at hand. And let’s be clear: there are real issues at hand. If you’re showing up for the chaos, know why you’re there.
