He’d rather wrestle bears

(Reposting this from December 2017 because it’s incredibly applicable for me today as I have spent most of the last two months alone with my thoughts.)

For today’s edition of “Bible Guys- they’re just like us!” —we have King David!

(But for real. Y’all have seen those ‘articles’ called “Stars! They’re just like us!” that have pictures of celebrities walking their dogs or washing their cars, etc. right?)

David. He may have held the title of King, but he is like you and I. Well, sorry. I won’t speak for you. He is definitely like me! 🙋🏻‍♀️

In Psalm 13:2 he asks of the Lord: “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts?”

Sure, David had to wrestle lions and bears and giants (that’s obviously what gave him his celebrity status), but he also wrestled with his own thoughts. And the bears he could handle. But his thoughts? That was trickier for him. Think about that. He wrestled bears better than he did his own thoughts.

Have you ever thought if you could just stop THINKING about something/someone or a particular situation that life would just be easier? If you could just stop thinking about the “what if’s” or the past regrets, or the “I should have done this” that your heart and mind would be more at rest?

David’s solution for wrestling with thoughts?

“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the LORD’s praise, for he has been good to me.” (Psalm‬ ‭13:5–6)

The next time your mind starts spinning and you can’t find rest, remind yourself of His goodness. Sing His praise. Put on a worship song. Pray for a friend. List the ways He has been faithful to you in the past. Remind yourself of Truth.
